Enrichment Teaching Assistant


The Institute of Technology Center for Educational Programs (ITCEP) is looking for several motivated undergraduate students to be teaching assistants for SATURDAY MORNING MATHEMATICS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS.

These programs for students in grades 3-12 are offered during the school year on various Saturday mornings. Their primary objective is to offer innovative activities focused on a variety of mathematics topics and their related science and engineering applications. Although students are challenged intellectually during these activities, the atmosphere is relaxed, with a focus on exploration.

Teaching assistants work from 8:30am to 12:30pm on select Saturday mornings during the academic year (September 30 through April 14). They assist in the classroom and mentor students.

These are paid teaching assistant positions.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics- UMTYMP

(Temporary or Visiting Positions)

The Institute of Technology Center for Educational Programs (ITCEP) will have one or more temporary positions (Assistant Professor of Mathematics) available starting Fall semester, 2008.  Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics and teaching experience at the undergraduate level are required.  The position emphasizes teaching while providing opportunities to expand your educational experiences or continue your research activities with members of the School of Mathematics.  The typical applicant is looking to increase their teaching experience before applying to tenure-track jobs, but recent ITCEP postdocs have also continued on to research institutes.

ITCEP has a wide range of undergraduate and outreach educational programs.  Depending on experience and interest, duties include each of the following:

  • Excellent teaching in a program involving mathematically talented high school students in University honors-level calculus courses;
  • Involvement with creative academic year enrichment programs and curriculum development;
  • Educational professional/scholarship activities (i.e. teacher professional development programs and materials, and/or relevant statistical/descriptive studies and publications).

Teaching will primarily be within the ITCEP programs, but the position can normally be structured with a shared appointment and teaching duties in the School of Mathematics.

Desired experience: Prior experience working with K-12 mathematics coursework and pre-service/in-service teacher education is desirable.  Preference will be given to applicants within 3 years of their Ph.D. degree whose background and experience are compatible with the above stated objectives.  Fluency in English, ability to communicate well.

Salary: The base salary for UMTYMP instructors is competitive within the parameters set by University policy

(Temporary or Visiting Positions)

The Institute of Technology Center for Educational Programs (ITCEP) seeks individuals with B.S. or B.A. in mathematics or related field to carry out some or all of the following duties under faculty supervision: lecture, recitation sessions, tutorial and office hour help sessions, grading, keeping of records. Teaching Specialists will teach in the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.

Desired experience: previous experience as a high school calculus instructor, college teaching assistant or equivalent. Good understanding of advanced undergraduate mathematics, fluency in English, ability to communicate well.

Salary: The base salary for teaching specialists is competitive within the parameters set by University policy.
