Opportunity to Learn from the Experts
The University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology (IT) is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and culturally diverse group of 80-100 high school students to work with small groups of University scientists, engineers and students, as well as peers from across the metro area who have similar interests in engineering and physical science.
If selected for this program, you will engage in demonstrations, lectures, tours, and lab experiences that will make engineering, science and math come alive as viable careers. Campus tours with Institute of Technology (IT) students, panel discussions and informal lunches with career advisors and faculty, and presentations by IT staff will help you to experience campus life, learn more about academic programs, and explore potential careers.

Following is a sample listing of modules that will be offered.
Polymer Materials: Make Them, Shake Them, Break Them
Professor Timothy P. Lodge,
Professor Marc A. Hillmyer
Professor Frank S. Bates and
Professor Chris W. Macosko
Materials Research Science & Engineering Center
Students will experience synthesis of polymers, characterization of their molecular and structural properties, how to process them into plastic parts, and how to test their strength and other properties. They we see demonstrations, have some short lectures, and do hands-on chemistry and engineering. Professors will be involved throughout, but graduate students will assist with all the nuts and bolts.
The special, reduced fee for those accepted into the program in 2008 is $95, payable only after notification of acceptance. Scholarships are available to students demonstrating financial need.
Program activities will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday on the Twin Cities campus at the University of Minnesota.
