Introduction to UMTYMP

Thank you for your interest in the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP). This program provides a unique opportunity for talented mathematics students to study accelerated mathematics with other bright students in classes taught by outstanding high school teachers. Registration for the Qualifying Exam is the first step in determining if you are eligible for this program. It is strongly recommended that you read the answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions regarding UMTYMP before registering to take this exam. UMTYMP intends to offer an algebra course in 2008-09 pending final approval of sufficient funding by the State legislature and adequate class size.

Registration for exam

Open the PDF registration form (this link opens in a new window and requires Adobe Acrobat), then print and complete the Two Page Application.

  • It is important that you provide all information requested.
  • Choose the test site where you would attend UMTYMP classes.
  • Ethnic Information is voluntary--whether you answer or not does not affect your chance of being selected for UMTYMP.
  • Be sure your name is on both pages (registration form and student profile).
  • It is strongly recommended that you make a copy of your exam registration form for your personal records.

UMTYMP is still accepting test registrations. After March 1, 2008, the test fee is $75.00 (includes a $20 late fee) and is not refundable. Your check, payable to the University of Minnesota, must be included with your registration form. We will not register you without the testing fee; however, fee waivers are available based on financial need.

Bring two #2 lead pencils
NO calculators may be used on this test.

Check in begins 1/2 hour before the exam. You MUST CHECK IN at the appropriate table to pick up testing materials before you enter the testing rooms. No students will be admitted after a test is scheduled to begin. If another test is scheduled at a later time or date, you may be admitted then, space permitting.

Once you are in the exam room, you will be asked to verify that all your registered personal information is correct. The test will then be administered. The test is 20 minutes in length. The entire testing process takes up to 60 minutes, since directions must be given, information gathered, and documents distributed and collected.

Parents CANNOT enter the test room with students. Be sure to arrange a meeting place with your child following the exam, as UMTYMP staff cannot be responsible for children at that time.

after the test

You will receive notification of your eligibility (based on test score and essay) for the UMTYMP program by May 9. If you are eligible, you will receive further information along with your invitation. Do not call the UMTYMP office. Scores will be sent by the end of the summer. Due to data privacy laws, we may not give scores over the phone.
